Enrichment Program 2009

Fig Tree Pocket State School runs a variety of enrichment programs for its students.

Extension Classes

This year we are fortunate to be able to offer extension classes in numeracy and literacy. With access to additional staff, students in years 4-7 are grouped in mathematics according to learning need and work in smaller classes two days per week. In addition, a small group of year 4 students are part of an extension writer's group. Students in the writer's group is reviewed each semester.

Opti - Minds

Fig Tree Pocket enters teams each year in Opti-minds. Students work together to solve problems through drama, maths and design challenges. In 2008, two of our teams were among the State finalists and our school received a special commendation. Mrs Harries and Mr Martin worked extremely hard with their teams and will be there again this year.

Science Club

The Science Club has been running for a number of years and has been a popular and successful after-school program. This year, we are able to accept 30 children each semester from years 4 to 7. Mrs Harries and her team has some amazing experiments and we all enjoy the Wednesday afternoon sessions.

Computer Club

Computer Club is run fortnightly on a Tuesday afternoon for students in years 4 to 7. We are able to accept 18 students each semester. Students have embarked on a range of exciting ICT projects, including; clay animation, creative drawing and design, web-based applications, Flash animation, digital stories, digital photography, photo editing, video editing and more recently, robotics.

The emphasis for students, is on working collaboratively with their peers to develop innovative skills and to express their individuality and creativity through Information Technology whilst having a great time.

Chess Club

The Chess Club has begun for the first time this year and is open to year 3s as well has 4 to 7s. It is very popular with 20 students applying in semester 1. Chess club hires a qualified tutor who teaches students at their own level each fortnight. In the future we can hopefully compete against some other schools.

Cross Country Training

To prepare for the Cross Country Event at Fig Tree Pocket SS, we run Cross Country training each twice each morning in beginning weeks, then Monday to Thursday from 8.00 am to 8.30 am in the final weeks leading up to the event. Training involves running and fitness activities and aims to be great fun whilst improving cardiovascular fitness.
